Matthew C. Wakefield, MD, FACS Dr. Matthew Wakefield was born in Ft. Polk, Louisiana. He attended medical school at University of Alabama, Birmingham School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency training at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. After residency, he spent two years as a general surgeon at Ft. Riley, Kansas. Following this, he returned to Walter Reed Army Medical Center for three years as the associate program director of general surgery. After residency he also was deployed to Afghanistan and Baghdad, Iraq. He served as an assistant professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
